Profile

I'm a web designer, keen on music in love with the Web. I have strong working knowledge of frontend languages and good practices and I always try to find clever and enjoyable ways to tackle technical or visual issues.

I'm completely self-taught, and over the last 5 years I've learned and read about a lot of topics from conception to web design and back end development. I'm trying to understand all the steps involved in website making even though I'm specializing now in the conception and frontend side of the job.

Experience

OuiCar - Intégrateur, Web Designer

I've been hire to work at OuiCar as a frontend developer. Most of my work involves updating the website as we add new features and making sure the thousands of monthly visitors browsing it get something visually pleasing (even in IE8) and as fast as possible (went from 68 to 83 YSlow score in a few months).

I also take care of the stats, setting up Events, Goals and different kind of tracking in Google Analytics to provide feedback to our marketing team on their efforts.

KISS - Frontend Developer

I've worked with KISS on a couple of projects, both internal and for clients. This allowed me to discover a new way to organize the code, for easier collaboration from a designer, to a frontend developer, then to a backend developer, along with tools to facilitate the workflow and even new JavaScript techniques.

Most of my work was Psd to Html/Css, and some site building with Drupal, which I turned out to enjoy. Lot of focus was given to localization and internationalization, along with support of older browsers.

Overall a great experience, a lot of new discoveries and a few more skills learned!

RentPost - Web Designer, Php Developer

Working with RentPost was my first experience team working. Over the seven months of our collaboration, I had the opportunity to design parts of the applications from complete screens to small icons, to do some frontend end development inside this huge, full-ajax interface and also to do some Php development.

Freelancing

While learning a lot of things on my own, I started working as a freelancer, to make some little money and get real projects to work on. Beside the technical side of the job, this also showed me how it is to work with clients, the importance of deadlines as well as the ability to estimate the time a task can take.

Projects

Over the last few years I worked on a few open-source projects either to learn or improve my workflow.

Mobile Ready Framework https://github.com/justinmarsan/MobileReadyFramework

This project remains the one I'm the most proud of.

It's a frontend framework meant to make cross-devices development easier, allows designers to use as many different images/resources as they need for each size, while keeping the number of HTTP requests as low as possible with JS lazy-loading techniques.

OpenCart Blank Theme https://github.com/justinmarsan/opencart-blank-theme

To make it faster to develop e-commerce websites, I created this starter theme. Most of the work has been rewriting the html and css to make it easier to update or change the design while keeping a result close to the default store. It's still maintained and I'd like to rewrite it completely in Html/Css with a cleaner and simpler theme to make it a perfect starter kit.

Forms Ready-To-Go
http://justinmarsan.github.com/Form-Ready-To-Go/

Forms are really important in any website's experience, and yet so painful to code. To fix that I wrote my "improved reset" for forms. It comes with classes to handle label positioning, re-creates the select to be stylable and several other features.

Tools of the trade

I also like to play with After Effects, use Git or SVN for version control, have some fun with Flash, do animations with RaphaelJs...

Education

I have a Baccalauréat which is the equivalent of :

My schooling was on a mode of teaching in the morning and sport activities in the afternoon. In Highschool I majored in Art History and minored in Music Theory.

Leisures

Music

Listen and play to music (guitar, drums), rock and pop.

Sports

Gymnastics, dance, tennis, rollerblade.

Geek Stuff

I’m a geek. So I have some geeky leisures, such as chatting on IRC on different kind of channels, reading tech-related blogs, testing new software, watching series...
